IBMA 2009
INTERNATIONAL
BLUEGRASS MUSIC AWARDS
Dailey & Vincent,
Michael Cleveland &
Flamekeeper and Dan Tyminski
Dominate IBMA Awards
NASHVILLE, TENN. (October
1, 2009)--Dailey & Vincent
were named IBMA’s
Entertainer of the Year for
the second consecutive year
at the 20th
Annual International
Bluegrass Music Awards, held
at the historic Ryman
Auditorium in Nashville,
Tennessee, on October 1.
The entire band received the
Vocal Group of the Year
award as well as Gospel
Recorded Performance for the
song “On the Other Side,”
written by Jimmy Fortune,
Kevin Denney and Tom Botkin.
Michael Cleveland continued
his winning streak with his
seventh Fiddle Player of the
Year trophy in nine years.
Cleveland’s band,
Flamekeeper, was named
Instrumental Group of the
Year for the third
consecutive year, and they
took home the Instrumental
Recorded Performance award
for a Bill Monroe classic,
“Jerusalem Ridge.”
Flamekeeper bass player
Marshall Wilborn and
mandolinist Jesse Brock both
received top honors on their
respective instruments.
Dan Tyminski whispered his
acceptance speech for Male
Vocalist of the Year, as he
battled a severe case of
laryngitis. Tyminski’s
current release, Wheels,
on Rounder Records, was
named Album of the Year.

It was an evening to
remember, complete with
emotional highs,
breath-taking instrumentals,
“hallelujah moment” vocals,
surprise winners and
returning favorites, kicked
off by a rousing version of
“Them Blues,” performed by
the Lonesome River Band—with
Brandon Rickman on soulful
lead vocals and “rock star”
Sammy Shelor on the banjo.
It was also a night for
duets. In addition to Dailey
& Vincent’s win and their
show-stopping a cappella
performance of “Don’t You
Wanna Go to Heaven,” the
Gibson Brothers, Leigh and
Eric, electrified the packed
house at the Ryman with
their rendition of “Ring the
Bell,” their sharp-edged,
soulful voices rising in
twin harmony. Danny Paisley
and Junior Sisk, both
nominated in the Song of the
Year and Emerging Artist
categories, combined their
bands for a musical
presentation that included
abbreviated versions of
“Don’t Throw Mama’s Flowers
Away” and “Leaving Baker
County,” ending with a duet
version of “I’m Going Honky
Tonking” that brought the
house down.
After performing the Tom
Petty song “I Won’t Back
Down” earlier in the
evening, Dale Ann Bradley
returned to the podium to
accept her third consecutive
award for Female Vocalist of
the Year. Josh Williams
accepted his second Guitar
trophy, thanking the
legendary Tony Rice for
making him “want to learn to
play the guitar in the first
place.” A band leader
nominated in the Emerging
Artist category this year,
Williams also thanked his
former bosses, Greg Cahill &
the Special Consensus, and
Rhonda Vincent & the Rage.
Kristin Scott Benson took
home the Banjo Player of the
Year trophy for the second
time. When an off-stage
chorus from her bandmates,
The Grascals, was heard (“We
love you, Kristin!”) she
quipped: “Well, you’d better
love me because you are
never gonna get rid of
me,” laughing.
Rob Ickes, who is
celebrating 15 years as a
co-founder of Blue Highway,
took home his 11th
trophy for Dobro Player of
the Year.
The crowd was thrilled to
see The SteelDrivers
recognized as Emerging
Artists of the Year, after
two years of rising
popularity, award
nominations and national
television appearances.
While grateful for
nominations from CMA, the
Americana Music Association
and the Grammys in 2008-09,
the SteelDrivers jokingly
pointed out that they hadn’t
won anything until now—and
thanked the membership of
IBMA profusely for turning
their “losing streak”
around.
Previous show producers were
recognized from the past 20
years of the IBMA Awards,
and hosts Kathy Mattea and
Hot Rize reminisced about
memorable moments—including
the time in 1995 when Ronnie
McCoury won the Mandolin
Player of the Year award,
and then walked out into the
crowd and presented it to
the father of bluegrass
music, Bill Monroe—who kept
it! There was the time
Sonny Osborne opened the
show with a solo version of
“America the Beautiful,”
less than a month after
9-11. In 1995 Jimmy Martin
made a record-breaking,
23-minute acceptance speech
upon entering the
International Bluegrass
Music Hall of Fame. In 1993
The Bluegrass All Stars took
the stage with Pete “Dr.
Banjo” Wernick of Hot Rize,
amazing the audience with
their skills. Several of
those individuals, now
approaching 30, have gone on
to become the reigning
generation of trend-setters
and award winners, including
Michael Cleveland, Josh
Williams, Chris Thile, Cody
Kilby and Ryan Holladay. The
new group of All Stars
introduced in 2003 included
Sierra Hull and Sarah Jarosz,
who have current albums on
Rounder and Sugar Hill,
respectively.
Tony Trischka welcomed
well-known
actor/producer/comedian
Steve Martin to the world of
bluegrass (by implying the
award show wasn’t a paying
gig) before the two banjo
players presented the Vocal
Group award to Dailey &
Vincent. Martin, who had
received two industry awards
earlier in the day for Best
Liner Notes and Graphic
Design for his album,
The Crow, took the
stage later to perform an
original tune, “Saga of the
Wild West,” backed by The
Steep Canyon Rangers, IBMA
Emerging Artists in 2006.
Pete Wernick introduced
Martin as “a man who needs
an introduction” to the
bluegrass community. With a
name like “Martin,” P ete
observed, he could have been
related to Jimmy Martin or
Benny Martin—but he wasn’t.
“He took the typical
bluegrass career path of
learning magic tricks,
learning to make balloon
animals and working at
Disneyland,” Wernick said,
adding that Martin now
refers to his movie
producing and acting career
as “the lost years,” in an
effort to “turn his life to
oblivion, poverty and banjo
rolls.”
Red Knuckles and the
Trailblazers, Hot Rize’s
alter ego band in flashy,
fringed western attire,
appeared on stage several
times in an attempt to
perform—which never
materialized, much to their
chagrin. At one point they
were joined by Gladiola
Bouquet Mercantile, Wendell
Mercantile’s third cousin
twice removed (who came back
both times), who bore a
slight resemblance to Kathy
Mattea.
Additional performances
included a song from the G-2
Bluegrass band “from the
bluegrass hills of Sweden,”
Sierra Hull & Highway 111,
The Grascals and The Del
McCoury Band. More than a
dozen female musicians who
participated in the
Daughters of Bluegrass
project on Tom T. & Dixie
Hall’s Blue Circle Records
took the stage to accept the
Recorded Event of the Year
award for their song, “Proud
to Be a Daughter of
Bluegrass.”
Legendary band leader Doyle
Lawson inducted the Lonesome
Pine Fiddlers into the
International Bluegrass
Music Hall of Fame. Bobby
Osborne, already a member of
the Hall of Fame with his
brother, Sonny, in The
Osborne Brothers, became the
first person in the history
of the Hall of Fame to be
inducted twice. “I never
thought when I left home in
1949 with an old guitar my
dad paid $30 dollars
for—with no case—that I’d
ever amount to a hill of
beans,” Osborne said. “I
never dreamed of nothing
like this when I joined the
Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. It
led to many, many things in
bluegrass music…. Since that
day I always had my sights
set way down the road, and I
still ain’t finished with it
yet.”
Paul Williams, who went on
to fame after the Lonesome
Pine Fiddlers as a member of
Jimmy Martin’s Sunny
Mountain Boys and now leads
his own group, observed to
Bobby: “I wouldn’t have had
no idea we’d draw this good
on a Thursday night. I tell
you; this is something I
never would have dreamed
of.”
Spontaneous applause broke
out when Melvin Goins, of
the pioneer bluegrass group
The Goins Brothers, took the
microphone. “This is a dream
that I never thought would
come true,” he stated
simply.
“I wish my brother Ray was
with us. I lost him two
years ago. I always loved
the sound of a banjo.” Then
he proceeded to tell the
story of how he purchased
his first instrument, a $6
banjo, for the $3 he had in
his pocket plus four hens
and a rooster from his
family farm.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s
John McEuen, who was
inspired as a teenager to
play the banjo after hearing
The Dillards perform,
inducted the influential
foursome from Salem,
Missouri, into the
International Bluegrass
Music Hall of Fame. Without
the Dillards, McEuen said he
would not have picked up the
banjo. Without him, the Dirt
Band wouldn’t have included
bluegrass. Without the Dirt
Band bluegrass, there would
have been no Will the
Circle Be Unbroken
albums—which introduced the
bluegrass genre to a
generation of fans in the
early ‘70s.
“I’m at a loss for words,”
Rodney Dillard said.
“Bluegrass has allowed me to
make friends all over the
world. It’s given me a
wonderful family, and by the
grace of God we got this
while we’re still alive,” he
added, smiling. “We all
thought that in order for
this to happen, one of us
would have to die—but no one
wanted to volunteer!”
“I’m flabbergasted to get an
award like this in my
lifetime,” Douglas Dillard
said, going on to thank his
parents for giving him and
Rodney the gift of music,
along with former record and
movie producers and their
publisher, Robin Lynn
Greene.
“Thank you very much,” Mitch
Jayne said. “You know, we’ve
been waiting 50 years for
someone to think we did
something. It’s incredibly
appreciated by the four of
us guys. Bluegrass was so
much fun…. We had the time
of our lives. Mine’s about
over and I’ve almost made it
through. I want to read you
something I got from Andy
Griffith yesterday, who
doesn’t travel much at 83.
Actually, I didn’t want to
come here either,” Jayne
joked. “I just came to meet
Melvin Goins.”
Griffith’s note read: “You
guys deserve this award. I’m
glad I could use you guys in
a positive way in the show.
I couldn’t be with you
tonight, but my thoughts and
my heart and my love are
with you.”
After the awards show hosts
Kathy Mattea and Hot Rize
collaborated on the song
“Untold Stories,” an
all-star instrumental group
performed the song,
“Rachel.” Multiple award
winners Stuart Duncan, Rob
Ickes, Ronnie McCoury, Jim
Mills, Missy
Raines and
Bryan Sutton were featured.
After accepting the
Entertainer of the Year
Award from Ricky Skaggs and
Sharon White, Darrin Vincent
of Dailey & Vincent said,
“Bluegrass fans are the best
fans in the whole wide
world. We’ll do our best
again this year to take it
to the masses.”
Power trio Paul Williams,
Melvin Goins and Bobby
Osborne nailed the harmony
on “Pain in My Heart,” a
Lonesome Pine Fiddlers
standard, followed by a
grand finale with The
Dillards song, “The Old Home
Place.” Rodney sang lead,
and the entire audience
raised the rafters of the
old Ryman church building in
three-part harmony.
The awards show was
broadcast live on Sirius XM
Satellite Radio on Bluegrass
Junction (Sirius channel 65,
XM channel 14) and will be
syndicated to more than 300
U.S. markets and 14 foreign
networks, thanks to the
sponsorship of Martha White,
GHS Strings, Sugar Hill
Records, Deering Banjos,

UK Tour planned for September 2010
Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters featuring
Roger Williams
Seeking bookings
The
powerhouse duo of Amy Gallatin and renowned resophonic guitarist Roger
Williams joined forces a few years ago to explore their mutual love of
country standards, served up with an acoustic treatment in the bluegrass
vein. The result is a toe-tapping blend of heartfelt vocals, soaring
harmonies and red-hot picking, traditional yet modern and distinct.
Americana radio host Ed McKeon says: "Amy's
vocals, with the power and tone of her voice, are tempered by Roger's
baritone which has been sanded smooth by cigarettes and, shall we say,
maturity. The song selections are perfect, the harmonies glorious, the
sentiments wonderfully maudlin (like any good old country song)."
The two are enhanced by the recent addition of
Roger's son J.D., who--in the time-honoured tradition of musical
consanguinity--complements his father's style perfectly, and by veteran
bassist Eric Levinson, formerly with Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass
Boys and later with Boston City Limits.

Michael Martin Murphey Signs Multi-Album
Recording Contract
Two New Singles Now Released: "Wildfire"
and "Running Gun"
Wildfire
Running
Gun
Rural
Rhythm Records is proud to announce Michael Martin Murphey
has a signed a multi-album recording contract with the label. Due
to the success of Murphey’s Rural Rhythm albums, “Buckaroo Blue
Grass” (released Feb 09) and “Cowboy Classics – Old West
Cowboy Collection” (released June 2009), the label will release
“BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS 2” on February 9, 2010.
The project will feature two singles that were released last week
during the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) World
of Bluegrass held in Nashville, Tennessee.
On Wednesday, September 30 during the IBMA convention, Rural Rhythm
Records hosted a Private Showcase that included music industry VIPs
who were treated to incredible performances and surprise
announcements. This special event included an extremely moving
performance by Michael Martin Murphey and Bluegrass
#1 hit artist, Carrie Hassler singing “Wildfire.”
Murphey and Hassler recorded the new version of this mega hit song
just two weeks prior to the IBMA convention. Last Thursday, Murphey
appeared on WSM Radio with Bill Cody
where the song was played during the show. Due to the overwhelming
listener response after "Wildfire's" airplay on the show,
and in anticipation of Murphey and Hassler performing the song
October 17th at SMU (Texas vs. Oklahoma) game during the
half-time show, the song will be available for digital download in
the next few weeks.
Also
during the VIP Showcase, Murphey performed another new single,
“Running Gun” with bluegrass veteran,
Audie Blaylock & Redline much to the delight of the
audience. The song will also be available on “BUCKAROO
BLUE GRASS 2.”
“BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS 2” includes a host of
other outstanding talent including: Sam Bush, Charlie
Cushman, Troy Engle, Pat Flynn, Andy Hall, Rob Ickes, Andy Leftwich,
Ryan Murphey, Craig Nelson, and Matt Pierson.
The album was produced by Ryan Murphey and
Engineered by Keith Compton.

Dapper McDans & Friends - Bluegrass & Old Timey Concert,
The Queen Margaret Hall, Linlithgow Folk Festival,
12th September, 2009
This well attended concert featured four Scottish acts
at a venue made popular for Bluegrass & Old Time music
by the Scottish Bluegrass Association who for many years
have regularly featured world class US bluegrass and old
time acts at this venue. These top turns have included,
Smith O'Reilly Band, New
England Bluegrass Band, Steve Kaufman, Whitetop Mtn
Band, Laura Boosinger & Josh Goforth & Rolls Boys to
name but a few. Queen Margaret Hall has become
synonymous with world class bluegrass so expectations
were high for the Dapper McDans'
event .
The opening Rockabilly band, Uncle Red were a star turn,
four piece outfit and wowed the audience with authentic
Americana rock and roll. The bass player was a like a
comet, up and down the fingerboard, spinning the bass,
performing acrobatics and keeping a really solid slap
going as well as donning a great selection of hats –
very entertaining. The more than competent vocals were
in the Elvis mode .
The drummer was really tight and created a great groove.
The accordionist had some stunning solos, improvisations
and backup. The sound mixing was good and the band got a
great audience reaction. The nearest they got to
bluegrass was a brilliant rockabilly rendition of
Blue Moon of Kentucky.
Following on from this a new duo on the scene featured
Cameron Oliphant in fine voice and his
equally talented
singing companion. This was an act with good vocals,
particularly the harmonies; a very nice and relaxed
stage manner and a very good selection of material. One
point worth noting is that
Cameron is a really tasty banjo player and it would be
good to hear more of his playing on some of the numbers
featured. A favourite was East Virginia Blues and next
time we hear this duo we hope Cameron will feature his
rock solid banjo picking on this type of material.
At one point in the proceeding the MC and sponsor,
Gordon Reynolds treated the audience to a history of the
bluegrass and old time genres. This was good for
newcomers to get the background however in his talk
Gordon relocated Bill Monroe from his birth place in
Rosine Kentucky to somewhere in sunny Tennessee – can we
therefore recommend a read of Bluegrass; a History, by
Neil Rosenberg. This would clear up those little
misleading confusions and
keep us fussy aficionados happy .
The evening continued with some gospel music from local
line-up ‘Wing and a Prayer’ who announced a name change
due to having found out that the band name was already
in use!. There
were some bright spots of harmony singing in this
relatively short set. The bass
played by John Stothard sounded good; the guitar playing
was competent. The lead voice however was lackluster
and mainly out of tune and spoiled
three of the songs entirely. This line up has the
potential to include banjo and this would strengthen the
delivery if
band leader Dan Markey played banjo to
his acknowledged ability. The
female singer in this line up has a great voice and
should consider taking over all lead responsibilities.
With coaching this line-up could improve
markedly.
The Dapper Mc Dans took to the stage to a rousing
welcome. I had heard them perform at Guildtown this year
and on The Nora Divine stage in the afternoon at
Linlithgow. On both these occasions the band came over
well. Three of the band are graduates of the SBA
Bluegrass Academy and have really come on a treat. Mark
Woods has a great vocal style and there are harmonies
that hit the button. Mark’s old time banjo is wonderful;
John Stothard has improved his bass playing and the
mandolinist is a real winner. I have not been able to
get an impression of the fiddle playing in this band as
the fiddler hangs back from the mike too far however
this is an
issue that could easily be rectified and
may be a matter of confidence. The band have a really
nice selection of material and a good stage presence
however their performance at Queen Margaret Hall
was somewhat marred by poor or should I say none
existent sound mixing – this for me was a great pity as
it was obvious that there should have been had a sound
man on the board rather than leaving it unattended to
feedback drastically and then simply to cut the sound
back in an over reaction, to where some important
elements of the band were barely audible. Having said
this the band did well and will undoubtedly pick up on
this.
In spite of one or two glitches this was all in all a
good fun evening gathering with some tasty highlights
and certainly a bargain at £4 - gets
the venue warmed up for those blisterin'
white hot US bluegrass stars.

Please join us in welcoming
Rebekah Long
to our family!
Her
resume speaks for itself and her performance
fits like a Cinderella story
I have been fortunate to
find the very best talent over the years to
perform VSLP music to my audiences. It's not
easy to find a musicians with the capability and
more importantly the vision to bring my brand of
music to reality. When Becky Buller
came into her own the bar raised higher than
expected and today she understands my music
style more than you can imagine. Ernie
Evans' creative ideas and musical
background paint a clear picture in our stage
show and has been a huge contribution off stage
as well.
2010 is
shaping up to be a breakout year and I need the
very best fit to bring my ideas to fruition.
Here is where the newest member of our team
comes in. Rebekah will
primarily play bass but she will also utilize
her ability to play multiple instruments and
sing. It is overwhelming at times to have such
talented performers on stage and put it all
together when the sky is the limit. We will miss
Bobby Davis and wish him well as he pursues
other means and truly appreciate his 3 plus
years as a member of VSLP.

Watch for a continued evolution tour in 2010

Rebekah A. Long
"...Singer and
multi-instrumentalist Rebekah Long
has joined forces with Valerie Smith
and band..."
Born in
Lincolnton and raised in the Classic South
Region of Georgia, Rebekah A. Long was exposed
from birth to the rich bluegrass heritage of
South Georgia. Rebekah’s love for music, her
vocal style, and stage presence were fostered by
studying such legendary musical icons as Bette
Midler, Dolly Parton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Keb'
Mo, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. She has a
renegade voice in the music industry that leave
her vocals filled with a yearning heart and edgy
soul. There is nothing more pleasing than to
hear her rendition of Dolly Parton’s Wildflowers
or Tom T. and Dixie Hall’s The Old Family Table.
Upon matriculating into College, Rebekah became
a music student majoring in percussion at
Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. After
three years, Rebekah transferred to Glenville
State College in West Virginia to combine her
study of percussion with bluegrass music under
the tutelage of Buddy Griffin, one of the former
Virginia Boys playing backup to Jim and Jesse
(McReynolds)
Prior to
transferring to Glenville State College, Ms.
Long moved her primary residence to Nashville,
TN. In the summer months, she began assisting
Ben Speer, renowned southern gospel singer, in
the direction of the Ben Speer’s Stamps-Baxter
School of Music and his publishing company Ben
Speer Music. While at Glenville State College,
she orchestrated the formation of a bluegrass
band, Mountain Fury, consisting of four female
performers. Rebekah produced and Engineer their
first CD Some Sweet Day. Two years after
matriculating into Glenville, graduating with a
B.A. in Music Education and a B.A. in Bluegrass;
the first bluegrass degree awarded at Glenville
State College or anywhere. During her final
semester, She was selected as the Outstanding
Teacher Intern. Since graduation, Rebekah has
toured full time playing bass and singing with
performances that include "The Little Roy &
Lizzy Show", appearances with legend Earl
Scruggs and in 2008 participate playing bass and
sing lead vocal on a musical selection recorded
on the Award Winning Bluegrass Bouquet; a CD
recorded by Tom T. & Dixie Hall's Blue Circle
Records featuring the Daughters of Bluegrass.
Most recently she has graduated from Nashville’s
School of Audio Engineering (SAE). While at SAE,
she had the opportunity to study under award
winning producer, Alan Shacklock and mentored by
4-time Grammy Award winning engineer, Mark
Capps, of SoundShop Studios.

Jussi
Syren And The Groundbreakers is one of the hardest working
bluegrass groups outside of the United States. Their touring
schedule takes no backseat to their US colleagues, and they
have an impressive recording catalogue.
Besides their native
Finland they have been touring all over Europe and nine US
States. Their recordings have got airplayin 20 + countries.
In their homeland they have taken bluegrass into mainstream:
Prime time TV shows, radio playlists, music charts, rock
festivals and even night clubs.
Their
sixth album “From Vyborg To L.A.” brings forth Syren´s
songwriting abilities. The novelty type title song about a
touring bluegrass band pays musical homage to The King Of
Bluegrass Jimmy Martin. “Call Of The Big Wind” and It´s
Draggin´ Me Down” show Syren´s ability to combine
traditional and modern elements in a creative way.
“Farmer´s Son” is written by Thomas Blom – a young and
talented Swedish bluegrass songwriter whose material has
been recorded by American top acts, such as Kenny And Amanda
Smith.
The
Groundbreakers four piece unit has been added with special
guests such as fiddler Kukka Lehto and dobro player Marko
Vanhatalo. Jussi Syren´s daughter Veera sings harmonies on
“The Ghost Of Laura Wilkins”.
“From
Vyborg To L.A.” demonstrates the hard driving uncompromising
sound of Jussi Syren And The Groundbreakers. Syren´s rough
and gritty vocals and “close to the bridge” mandolin
picking along with Tauri Oksala´s smoking banjo are
guaranteed to grab the fan. The rock solid rhythm of J.P.
Putkonen´s guitar and Kari Hella´s bass tie the sound
together. The liner notes are written by Alan Bibey.

Chances are most people who attend MerleFest
have at some point during the festival misplaced
something-keys, cell phone, camera, musical

those items ended up at the MerleFest Lost and

owners in retrieving their items. Believe it or
not, they even had a set of false teeth turned

McCoury Music Newsletter,
October 2009
www.mccourymusic.com
Check out all the latest news and info
from Del & the Boys top bluegrass artists
The Del McCoury Band has a brand new
studio album due out Oct. 27, 2009. This is the first straight
ahead studio release (non-gospel, non-concept album), since 2005's
Grammy Award winning "The Company We Keep," but I assure you it's
worth the wait.
We're test driving a new marketing and
order system, and we hope you like it. By clicking here,
www.delmccouryband.com/downloads.cfm you'll be able to
stream the entire album, as well as order in several different
packages. Even better, you can download the new album immediately
upon purchase as a high quality (320k) mp3.
Here's some new info on the new release:
For those that worried Del McCoury's
recent box set was a swan song can now rest easy. Family Circle, the
band's first non-gospel studio album since 2005's Grammy winning The
Company We Keep shows that somehow, Del McCoury keeps getting better
with age. This release features the same top notch picking and
singing you expect from the Del McCoury Band, but also shows the
band continues to grow and evolve with some song selections and
arrangements that may surprise you. There are some covers--as the
band has come to be known for over the years--with tunes formerly
recorded by Slim Whitman, Mark Knopfler, and Solomon Burke, but
probably most surprising is Jerry Lee Lewis' "Break Up" on which the
band uses their acoustic instruments to mimic The Killer's piano
sounds. There are also some more traditional numbers and a gospel
quartet that shows the McCourys as a band don't get enough credit
for their vocal ability. All the songs are backed by the slickest
picking in the land, and the combination makes for what some are
already saying is the best recording the Del McCoury Band has ever
made.
Thanks for being such a loyal fan of the
Del McCoury Band.

MONIAIVE
–
The new Scottish bluegrass festival supported & sponsored by the
Scottish Bluegrass Association
www.moniaive.org.uk
Ulster pickers at first Moniaive
Bluegrass Festival, Sept. 2009
Colin Henry reports:
I thought I would send a few words about the first
ever
Moniaive Bluegrass Festival in Scotlan d
which was held this past weekend. It was a resounding success. The
two bands from Northern Ireland attending were Janet accompanied by
myself along with Ivan and Wilson from the Broken String band [photo
above], and the full Broken String Band
itself.
There were a number of Scottish performers and one from Germany, I
think. All the bands were excellent. The headliners were
Wayne Taylor and Appaloosa from the USA. I have to say
that of the many bands I have heard this past summer they have been
the highlight. They perform a lot of original material but within
the bluegrass tradition and as a consequence the band has a very
fresh sound. The members are all top-notch players. I got a chance
to pick some tunes with Dave Giegerich their dobro player, and he is
a mighty player.
The organisation of the festival by Hugh Taylor and Paul Lyttle, not
to mention Paul's wife Anja, was flawless. We were all treated with
the utmost kindness and hospitality. The village of Moniaive and the
surrounding area is beautiful. I know that we are all hoping that we
will be invited back.

Daughters of Bluegrass Win IBMA Recorded Event
of the Year
Dale Ann Bradley
Takes Home 3rd IBMA Female Vocalist of
the Year Award
Kristin Scott Benson 2
Time Banjo Player of the Year
Dixie Hall 3 Time Winner
of Recorded Event of the Year
Nashville, TN:
The Daughters of Bluegrass garnered
their second International Bluegrass
Music Association (IBMA)
RECORDED EVENT OF THE YEAR AWARD
for their song, “Proud
to be a Daughter of Bluegrass.”
The song is from their current Blue Circle
Records CD, BLUEGRASS BOUQUET
produced by Dixie Hall,
Frances Mooney and Paula Wolak.
Winners were announced during the
20th Annual IBMA Awards Show
held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on
October 1, 2009. Dale Ann Bradley,
who provides vocals on “Proud to be
a Daughter of Bluegrass,” also won
her third consecutive award for
IBMA FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR.
Dixie Hall gets sole writer
credit for PROUD TO BE A DAUGHTER OF
BLUEGRASS in addition to the other 16
songs on the project (some
co-written with Tom T. and one each with Billy
Smith and Troy Engle). This makes her third
Recorded Event, two earlier wins being Mark
Newton's Follow Me Back To The Fold with Tom T.
co-writer and Daughters' Back To The Well with
Lorraine Jordan co-writer.
“A very well deserved win for these
mega-talented daughters who came shining through
in spite of what once appeared to be
insurmountable odds. The award also seems like a
tip of the hat to all the girls down through the
years who have manned the trenches and the
record tables!” said Ms. Dixie.
Frances Mooney helped receive
the award on stage and later stated, “To be
nominated for the 2009 IBMA Recorded Event of
the Year among such great bluegrass artists is
truly an honor; but to win this Award simply
touched my heart to know we had so many fans who
loved our music and voted for us. I only wish
IBMA rules had not changed this year, so that
ALL Daughters on this project could have been
eligible for this award.” The group also won
the same award in 2006 for their ALBUM,
BACK TO THE WELL also on
the Blue Circle label.
BLUEGRASS
BOUQUET
features 17 songs and 50 daughters:

Gainsborough November
Workshops
Due to his project writing a book on the Hammonds Family which hopefully
will be published next year, Dwight Diller is unable to attend the November
Workshops in 2009 therefore Keith Johnson has arranged for Gerry Milnes to
take over Dwight's Banjo Workshops for Beginners and Intermediate.
Many of our Members have
seen Gerry when we had the Gandydancer String Band over for the Festival.
He is steeped in Old Time Music and has had several full time positions
within the Old Time Music scene in the States including folk arts
coordinator for the Augusta Heritage Workshops. He's an accomplished fiddle
and banjo performer and instructor and has won many contests on both
instruments. His input will be a real treat for us.
Dave Bing will be over for the Fiddle Workshops but Dave and Gerry will
take it in turns to teach both Banjo and Fiddle which will be great for all
participants, new or old. This will allow students to benefit from the
repertoires and knowledge of the fiddle and banjo styles of West Virginia and
the surrounding Appalachian area with much sought after teaching.
The Beginners Workshops will be the weekend of November Friday 6th to
Sunday 8th and the Intermediate will be Friday 13th to Sunday 15th at the
Beckingham and Saundby Village Hall, near Gainsborough. If you haven't
attended in the past few years, you have missed out on the outstanding
Beckingham Saundby venue, with plenty of indoor camping, new clean showers,
jam rooms, and the excellent meals catered by Robert Johnston (Keith's
son), at a cost of £110 per weekend. The weekends start 6:00 Friday,
through to Sunday 4:30pm. Don’t miss it!
Keith will mail out booking forms to all FOAOTMAD Members when he returns
from the States in early September. Non Members will be charged £120 for
the weekend. Contact:

Top European Bluegrass Band
G2
plan to release a new CD 'Untapped Routes'
Release date -
early 2010
In a few
years the name G2 will be synonymous with European
bluegrass. The five band members, best friends since they
met while jamming at a festival in their native Sweden four
years ago, have formed the most exciting bluegrass band ever
to come out of Europe. With one album under their belts,
another in the works, and plans to tour extensively in the
United States, G2 is poised to make a mark on the bluegrass
world.
The name G2
stands for generation two. Each member of the band has a
father or uncle who plays bluegrass and country music,
making them the second generation of Swedish bluegrass
musicians. When they played together for the first time
Christoffer Olsson, Jens Koch, Erik Igelström, Tobias
Strömberg, and Jimmy Sunnebrandt realized almost instantly
that they had something special. They clicked musically and
personally and their collaboration has quickly borne fruit.
The band’s
first CD, Where the Tall Grass Grows, was widely acclaimed
by critics and fans alike. Bluegrass Unlimited praises the
band for playing bluegrass that, “still retain[s] its
original flavour without coming off as ironic or retro.” The
Bluegrass Blog lauds the album for capturing the band’s
“technical prowess.” With their second release, Untapped
Routes, G2 continues to develop their own unique sound with
more original material written by Christoffer and honed by
the group.
G2 won the
#1 European Bluegrass Band title in 2007. The have already
toured in America, playing festivals such as Bean Blossom,
ROMP, and the IBMA Fan Fest. They have appeared on Swedish
television’s national morning show Nyhetsmorgon and opened
up for Kris Kristofferson at the gorgeous Dalhalla
amphitheater.
The next
couple of years are shaping up to be big for the band. 2010 will see an
extended U.S. tour. They win new fans with every appearance.
Crowds, especially younger folks, are drawn to G2’s
contagious enthusiasm, prodigious talent, and overwhelming
joy for playing the music. They are breaking new ground as a
European band in America and the world is watching. Christoffer
is G2’s prolific songwriter and lead singer. Since the age
of seven he has written songs in English because, he says,
“you can’t rhyme in Swedish!” His compositions capture the
essence of modern bluegrass and his guitar playing drives
the band’s rhythm.
Erik grew up
playing folk and country on the guitar, taking after his
dad. The movie O Brother Where Art Thou sparked his interest
in bluegrass and the mandolin. When he finally got the
instrument in his hands, it felt like it was always meant to
be there.
Jens got his
first banjo from his uncle for Christmas at age twelve.
Although it was difficult getting started on the banjo in
Sweden, he listened a lot and made a couple of trips to the
U.S. while learning. His playing is straight-ahead
traditional Scruggs-style and just from listening one might
guess he’d been born in North Carolina.
Tobias grew
up hearing his banjo-playing dad sing “Sunny Side of the
Mountain” while they herded sheep, but he played mostly punk
rock until about ten years ago when he almost accidentally
slipped into bluegrass from the rockabilly he and his
friends were playing. He heard the dobro for the first time
at a festival in Sweden and he was hooked.
Jimmy has
played the fiddle since he was little. He played bass in a
bluegrass band with his dad and studied and played
everything from classical to jazz to hard rock while in
school. His solid bass playing establishes the foundation of
the band’s rhythm and his harmony vocals form a tight
seamless blend.

Nashville's bluegrass
supergroup, The Mashville Brigade,
is pleased to announce they are available for select
road dates in 2010. On the road dates, the legendary
Terry Baucom will be stepping in
for Mashville co-founder Aaron McDaris
on banjo, due to Aaron's busy touring schedule with
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage.
The band was formed almost three years ago by a
group of friends (Aaron McDaris, Ashby
Frank, Darrell Webb, Jim Van Cleve, and
Randy Barnes) from various
professional touring bands as a way to perform and
have some fun together in their spare time while
they were off the road. Since the formation of the
group, it has become a "must see" event for any
Bluegrass fan passing through Nashville. It is the
only weekly Bluegrass performing act at Nashville's
bluegrass home, the "World Famous" Station Inn. Well
known country and bluegrass music entertainers such
as Dierks Bentley, Ronnie Bowman,
and Terri Clark, just to name a
few, have been seen sitting in with the Brigade. In
fact, Dierks requested the group to perform with him
at his annual Nashville Charity Motorcycle
Ride last year.
The band released their critically acclaimed album
"BLUEGRASS SMASH HITS" on
Rural Rhythm Records in 2008 as a tribute to the
traditional bluegrass songs that they have performed
on stage and in jams for years. The album continues
to appear on Billboard’s
Top 50 Bluegrass Album Chart - with
numerous tracks making their way up various other
charts. Songs from the album continue in heavy
rotation on Sirius-XM Bluegrass Channel "Bluegrass
Junction" show.
The Mashville Brigade promises to deliver a high
energy, hard driving, modern but still traditional
bluegrass all-star performance and is looking
forward to hitting the road! For booking
information, contact Ashby Frank at
ashby@ashbyfrank.com
or by phone at 615-290-5533. For more information on

NASHVILLE, October 14, 2009 -
The Musicians Hall of Fame celebrated with a
room full of industry admirers, peers, and
contemporary stars on Monday night, as the crowd
gathered in force to salute the 2009 class of
virtuosos inducted into the Musicians Hall of
Fame on Monday, October 12 at the Schermerhorn
Symphony Center in Nashville.
Legends
Chet Atkins, Billy Cox, Dick Dale,
Charlie Daniels, Fred Foster, Victor Feldman,
Paul Riser, and band TOTO
all became members of the prestigious club that
already includes Booker T. & The MGs, The
Crickets, Duane Eddy, Al Kooper, The Memphis
Horns, The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Billy
Sherrill, The Nashville A-Team, The Blue Moon
Boys, The Funk Brothers, The Memphis Boys, The
Tennessee Two, and The Wrecking Crew.
|
The
late, great guitar legend, Chet
Atkins, received tribute from
contemporary guitar master and country
artist, Steve Wariner, who was joined by
longtime Atkins sideman and composer,
Paul Yandell. The two
played an enchanting tribute to some of
Atkins better known tunes and compositions.
The award was accepted on Atkins behalf by
his daughter, Merle Atkins Russell. "I know
my father would be so happy to know that he
is in the company of old friends, and so
many musicians that he admired so much,"
she said.
Celebrated King of the Surf Guitar,
Dick Dale, known through the
decades for his enthusiastic manipulation of
the guitar amplifier, and the namesake
behind the "Showman Amp," created especially
for him by guitar and amplifier Guru, Leo
Fender, rocked the house into euphoria,
bringing them to their feet, with his
energetic and volume pumped performance. It
was apparent that Dale was having the time
of his life, interacting with audience
members and taking the audience on a musical
ride that had many jumping up and down at
their seats. Dale is best know for his
rendition of "Misirlou," a tune that gained
a new generation of fans when it became the
hit song behind Quentin Tarantino's Pulp
Fiction in 1994).
|
Longtime Dale friend, Al Jardine
original Beach Boys member, performed a
rousing, audience accompanied version of
"Help Me Rhonda," a song on which he sang
lead, prior to inducting the guitar great
into the Hall of Fame and turning over the
microphone to him for his emotional
acceptance speech.
The
evening continued to gain intensity as Jimi
Hendrix longtime friend and bass player,
Billy Cox, took the stage
to lay down the beat, paying tribute to
Hendrix while showcasing his own musical
prowess and expertise.
Country
star, Charlie Daniels, not
only had the crowd in amazement with his
stellar guitar playing but continued to take
them to the top with his hit, "The Devil
Went Down to Georgia", showcasing his fiery
fiddle playing and paying tribute to his
current band as the best of his entire
career."I'm probably the best taken care of
artists in the music industry," he said, as
he also said thank you to his staff, road
crew and all others involved in daily
operations.
Cox and
Daniels together on stage was also a
homecoming of sorts being that Cox once
played in Daniels band, after he was no
longer playing with Hendrix. It was
apparent that the two were having the time
of their lives. Former Allman Brothers
guitarist, Dickey Betts,
joined forces with Daniels for Bett's,
"Southbound," to which the two traded licks
and tossed melodies back and forth in a tour
de force of guitar playing.
|
Producer Fred Foster, a man
who played an important part in the careers
of such luminaries as Roy Orbison, Kris
Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and others,
was honored via video message from a
thankful Dolly Parton.
""I'm sorry I can't be there in person," she
said in the message, "but it's your own
(damn) fault: you made me famous!"
Kristofferson also paid homage via
video to the man with whom he co-wrote one
of his biggest hits, "Me and Bobby McGee."
Blues rocker, Tony Joe White,
paid tribute to Foster with his self-penned,
"Poke Salad Annie," prior to handing Foster
his statue.
Motown
legend and 2007 inductee, Bob
Babbitt, a member of the famed Funk
Brothers, presented the award for
Paul Riser and accepted for him in
his absence, sharing stories and experiences
about Riser and his brilliance as an
arranger.
The
evening capped off with progressive rockers
TOTO (David Paich, Steve
Lukather, David Hungate, and Steve Porcaro),
taking the stage with good pals
Rascal Flatts, to perform a medley
of some of their biggest hits, including
'"Rosanna," "I'll Be Over You," "Hold the
Line," and "Africa." Rascal Flatts stated
their thrill with being able to induct
original band members, with Jay DeMarcus
saying, "My entire life, I've been a Toto
fanatic!"
The
evenings MC honors rotated between Union
Gap's Gary Puckett and Steve Wariner, with
Gary Puckett bringing the crowd to their
feet with his performance of "Woman Woman."

The event
was sponsored by BMI, Hilton, Union Station,
Gretsch, Nashville Convention & Visitor's
Bureau, and U.S. Imprints.
This was the
3rd Annual Musicians Hall of Fame show. Inductees
are nominated nationally by the Musicians Union who
has a membership of over 90,000 as well as a stellar
list of other music industry professionals. |

TONY FURTADO
–
arriving soon!
Tony is planning a
UK tour for
October/November 2009 – details on his web site – meanwhile check out his cool my space and his
latest album and tuition material.
BIOGRAPHY – Tony Furtado –
Deep Water
I t
takes guts to start your album off with The Bawds of Euphony, an
instrumental banjo tune that draws its cryptic title from the words of a
Wallace Stevens poem. But Tony Furtado is a man unafraid to go with his
heart when it comes to his music. Tony’s 14th album, entitled Deep Water,
comes entirely from Tony’s heart. This CD is 100% Tony Furtado, from the cover
art that he created, to the collection of 14 songs that he wrote and chose
specifically for Deep Water.“To me, this album is a snapshot of my life and
the world around me when I wrote and recorded it. Influences ranged from
the politically charged air and environmentally changing world, to the
authors I was reading (Edward Abbey, Wallace Stevens Charles Bukowski,
Richard Wright) and songwriters I was listening to (Tom Waits, Elliot
Smith, Bon Iver) I have to say, this album ranks pretty high on the “moody
scale” for me.”
By the age of 19, Furtado
had earned himself a reputation as a young banjo prodigy, winning two
National Bluegrass Banjo Championships. Despite the press and praise as one
of the most promising bluegrass artists, Furtado decided that one genre
wasn’t enough for him. Creatively, he had something more to express. “I
don’t think I could ever be happy staying in any one place musically,” says
Tony Furtado.
Next, Furtado picked up the
slide guitar and soon established that his dexterity transitioned with
ease. Using fingers and a bottleneck, it wasn’t long before Furtado began
writing songs that had a folksier feel and featured himself as the
vocalist. Previously he had released banjo albums that featured the vocals
of talents such as Allison Krauss and Tim O’Brien. But Tony wanted to add
singer to his songwriter and instrumental talents. And, in true Furtado
fashion, he accomplished that as well. Whether he’s playing with a band, or
recording as a solo artist, his playing and considerable skills as a
multi-instrumentalist and his strong song writing prowess have led to him
to be embraced on record and on stage.
Tony is an extremely
skilled musician with a riveting voice who blends rock music with elements
of
Americana,
folk, and pop. His musical reach is broad enough to resonate with fans of
Ry Cooder, The Band, Bruce Springsteen, CCR, Bela Fleck and Tom Petty,
among others. Furtado’s extremely impressive, furious slide guitar skills
and 25+ years of banjo experience will blow away the musicos; for the
lovers of a story in a song, Furtado has a few tales to tell; and to those
who are looking for a performance, get ready to be captivated, charmed, and
entertained. And on Deep Water you will find yourself pulled in and drawn
under.

wing and fly. Liz has been too busy with EWOB work,
cancer treatment, and lots of extra sleep to complete
her new website with the wonderful
Thirsty Lizards, but she intends to see
the new website completed this fall.

LIZ MEYER NEWS:
Liz missed the EWOB Festival 2009 due to severe back
problems caused by an aggressive breast cancer invasion
of the bones that virtually destroyed her spine
(backbone). Since early June, Liz has been undergoing
treatment at a very special little hospital in southern
Germany.
German cancer clinics are considered the gold standard
in cancer treatment worldwide, and Klinik St. Georg is
the gold standard among German cancer clinics. Liz
attributes this to its medical director, Dr. Friedrich
Douwes, whom she describes as brilliant, creative, and
years ahead of his time. Dr. Douwes is also the
President of the German Oncology Association. (Klinik
St. George
website)
Although Liz arrived looking like a lost cause, her
treatments are going very well. The cancer invasion has
been reversed, her bones are slowly and successfully
being remineralized, and soon, with lots of
physiotherapy and exercise, Liz will be able to sit up
for the first time in 4 months. She expects to be home
in Holland before Christmas.
You can write to Liz at this reply email address, or by

Folk favourites lined up
for the Fruitmarket
Glasgow - up in bonnie
Scotland
this September
One of
Glasgow’s most atmospheric venues, the
Old Fruitmarket, will open its doors to an eclectic line-up of Scottish and
international folk talent this autumn.
Scots fiddle master
Alasdair Fraser and American cellist Natalie Haas return to
Glasgow on 16th
September following their sell-out show at Celtic Connections 2008, which
was acclaimed as a “feast for the ears” by The Herald. Their resurrection
of the classic musical marriage between big and small fiddles – a familiar
feature of Scottish music in the 18th century – results in a fascinating
combination that occasionally sounds like a baroque duo. Support comes from
Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award winners Pipedown.
The inimitable fiddle and
accordion duo Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham arrive at the Fruitmarket on
September 19th. Having toured together since 1988, they have a reputation
for an irrepressible sense of fun and quick-witted storytelling as well as
delivering virtuoso performances.
Boston-based alternative
bluegrass band Crooked Still perform on 20th
October. With a fearsome live reputation, they are known for their
high energy, technical skill, unique instrumentation and innovative
acoustic style. Scottish chanteuse Emily Smith opens the evening.
Ground-breaking Scottish
mavericks Shooglenifty push the word “traditional” to its limits with their
blend of dance vibes and roots music. One of the best live bands on the
Scottish scene, their genre defying sound has been described as everything
from “acid croft” to “hypnofolkadelia,” and they bring the Fruitmarket Folk
season to a close on 11th November. For further information, images, review

Hi all!

I hope you've had a good summer. It
was a particularly beautiful one
here in Colorado, and I'm glad to
say that Joan is well-recovered from
the viral illness that kept her
inactive most of the spring and
summer. Looking and singing great,
with her usual spunk!
Some interesting things look out
for...
Our
friend
Steve Martin
is about to start touring behind his
hit banjo album,
The Crow.
He has made a great entry this year
into the bluegrass world after years
of mainly picking at home, with the
album at #1 in bluegrass most of the
year and hitting the
Billboard
Top 100. I wrote a cover story about
Steve for the October
Bluegrass Unlimited,
and he'll also perform at the IBMA
Awards Show with the national tour
right after that, his first tour in
decades. I will be joining him on at
least one show, in Denver at the
Paramount Theatre.

Speaking
of the

Hot

You can listen live on Sirius

any of over 300 U.S. stations and 14

I hope you can attend or tune in, as

A
heads-up about our
Bluegrass Jam Camps in
Boulder, Colorado this November.
We've hosted these camps for ten
years now, and it's
hard to express our satisfaction at
helping so many people achieve the
breakthroughs they do at the camp.
Playing music in a group is one of
the great pleasures in life, and
it's more accessible than most
people realize. With the
Basic Jam Camp two months off,
Nov.
13-15, it's not too late for people
who don't even currently play an
instrument... there's time to learn
the four simple chords needed to
start jamming.
Yes, it really is that easy to get
started!
An
instrument + a tuner
+ four
chords = a lot of music and fun.
Many people have dreamed of playing
music with others but their
instruments have not seen daylight
in years. Our mission is to see
those
instruments out of the cases and the
musicians out of the closet!
If you know of such and instrument
or such a person, send them to us! [More
info here.]
For more experienced players,
there's the
Intermediate Jamming & Band Skills
Camp Nov. 20-22. We help
people upgrade their bluegrass
skills such as lead playing and lead
and harmony singing, band dynamics,
and song arrangements, as well as
expanding their repertoire. [Click
here.]
The camps draw folks from near and
far. The affordability and
hospitality of the Boulder
Inn, and its easy access to
Denver and its airport are part of
the reason most campers come in from
out of town. Jam camp is a great way
to learn or review the ground rules
and repertoire of bluegrass jamming,
connect (or re-connect) with fellow
pickers from all over, and have big
fun making music together in a
full-immersion setting.
If you can't make it to Boulder,
watch for our 2010 schedule of camps
soon on
DrBanjo.com.

soon: our
25th Anniversary
Winter Banjo Camps, Basic Skills
(Jan. 4-9), Intermediate (Jan.
11-16) or Advanced (Jan. 18-23).
Also at the Boulder Inn! I'm proud
to receive comments like this:
"The months after the camp
were the most productive and
fun I've had with the
banjo." -- Keith
P., MD Basic camp 09
"It's nice to have someone
so passionate who can also
communicate the details of
good playing...as well as
reminding all of us why we
started in the first
place...to have FUN."
-- Andy M., VA Intermed.
camp 08
"I really enjoyed the Banjo
Camp. It was thoughtful,
well organized, and
beneficial in more ways than
I could have expected. The
fact that you've been doing
it for more than 20 years is
evident." -- Tom L.

 And
check out my new
Make Up Your Own Banjo Solos.
Learn how to create
convincing banjo solos, both
"on the fly" in jam sessions
and with more precision in
your practice time. Here's
the alternative to total
dependence on tab and
memorizing other people's
arrangements. Reactions to
the video have been great,
and they're going fast!
AND, watch for a brand new CD
release coming out this fall
from
Long Road Home,
a Colorado bluegrass band I'm
proud to have joined last year.
LRH features some of the best
young bluegrass talent in
Colorado, plus me and veteran
Nashville Bluegrass Band bass
whiz Gene Libbea. This will be a
fun and impressive record,
recorded live at eTown Hall in
Boulder.
That's the news for now. Have a
great end of summer and early fall,
and keep picking!

Ralph Stanley’s Life Story, Man of
Constant Sorrow,
Will Be
Released Oct. 15 by Gotham Books
(Nashville, TN) - September
28, 2009 - The famously
close-mouthed Ralph Stanley tells all—or
nearly all—in his fascinating memoir
named after his signature hit, Man
of Constant Sorrow: My Life and Times.
Written with music journalist Eddie
Dean and published by Gotham Books, the
320-page personal and career narrative
will go on sale October 15.
Stanley has been a luminary in
bluegrass music circles virtually since
he and his brother Carter launched the
Stanley Brothers duo in 1946. But he
rocketed to real celebrity status in
2000 via his musical participation in
the Coen Brothers’ movie, O Brother,
Where Art Thou? His performance of
“Oh, Death” on the movie’s soundtrack
album earned him two Grammy awards. (A
third would soon follow.) He was also
the first artist of the 21st Century to
be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.
Now 82 and still touring, Stanley
writes in the book about his
hardscrabble boyhood years in rural
Virginia, abandonment by his father, the
influence of folk and church music, the
Stanley Brothers’ live radio shows and
early records, the perils of touring in
the 1940s and ‘50s on America’s
backroads, Carter’s fatal drinking
problem and re-inventing himself as a
solo act after Carter’s death in 1966.
In telling his stories, Stanley gives
the reader intimate glimpses of such
fellow stars as Bill Monroe, A. P.
Carter (of the fabled Carter Family),
Porter Wagoner, George Jones, Dwight
Yoakam, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs
and of King Records founder Syd Nathan
and super producer T. Bone Burnett.

Hi John,
Please would it be possible to give a
mention in the next edition of "Bluegrass and More" of a gig that I
am organising down here in sunny Hampshire?
The details are as follows :
Legendary ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin will be bringing his
alt-Bluegrass band The Coal Porters back down to sunny Hampshire
(and not too far from Surrey either!) for a return visit to The
Studio @ The Petersfield School, Cranford Road, Petersfield, Hants,
GU32 3LU, on Saturday 24th October.
The
Coal Porters were once described by one USA Bluegrass Festival
attendee as "a cross between The Clash and Bill Monroe", and it was
a description that the band loved as it encapsulated how dedicated
they were to updating tradition, and playing from the heart.
These
boys (and girl!) are an acoustic act with attitude, swinging from
banjo-driven breakdown and returning to an era when Bluegrass ruled
and Appalachia was the place to be.
Specials guests for the evening are the wonderful and sugar-sweet
Carrivick sisters, who are guaranteed to charm even the hardest
heart!
Tickets
for what promises to be a fantastic evening of top bluegrass
entertainment can be purchased from The Studio box office on 01730
234641, or e-mailing to reserve at
thestudio@petersfieldschool.com.
Mail order tickets can be obtained by sending a cheque (made payable
to organiser Ken Brown) for the required amount of tickets, to Ken
Brown, 3 The Old Road, Cosham, Portsmouth, Hants, PO6 2SP, along
with an SAE.
Hope you can put the above in the next
issue - thanks for your help and please keep up the great work.
Take Care,
Ken.
Hi,
Last minute reminder - we are back at the pub on Tuesday (Golden
Lion). I will have tickets for the Tony Furtado Concert with me

Dear Dennis
Schut,
Hope all is well.
The Grascals are
returning to Europe in July 2010 and are
available from July, 20 to 22 and July 26 to
August 5, 2010I would like you to
consider booking them to perform at the
European World of Bluegrass festival &
Tradeshow. They are the best bluegrass group
in the USA right now.
Additional information can be found here:
http://www.wba-ent.com/Grascals.html
The Grascals - Already among the most
beloved and acclaimed of contemporary
bluegrass groups, The Grascals were the 2007
International Bluegrass Music Association's
Entertainers of the Year, first earning the
top honor in 2006, only one year after being
named Emerging Artist of the Year and
winning Song of the Year for "Me and John
and Paul." Their trademark blend of
traditional bluegrass and classic country
with more modern elements, delivered with
vocal and instrumental intensity and
virtuosity, earned them Grammy nominations
for their first two critically-acclaimed
releases - The Grascals and Long List of
Heartaches. Timely and timeless, The
Grascals' music is entirely relevant to the
here and now, yet based on a deeply-seeded
knowledge of and admiration for the music's
founding fathers. They have shared the stage
with Dolly Parton, Brooks & Dunn, Dierks
Bentley, Patty Loveless, Mac Wiseman, J. D.
Crowe, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers, Steve
Wariner, Vince Gill, the Jordanaires and
many others. They are proud to make regular
guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and
have also appeared on Opry Live, The Late,
Late Show with Craig Ferguson, CBS Early
Show and the TV Guide Channel. All three of
their releases have reached the #1 spot on
the Billboard Bluegrass charts. Their latest
critically acclaimed CD "Keep On Walkin'" is
in stores now!
If you are interested in booking a
performance please contact me.
Looking forward to continuing our
conversations.
